Niger State Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago has emphasized the importance of climate education in addressing the global challenge of climate change.
The governor made this assertion when a delegation from the Greening Education Partnership (GEP) visited him at the Government House in Minna.
According to Governor Bago, lack of education on climate-related issues is a significant obstacle in finding solutions to climate change.
“Climate change has been a major focus of my administration since inception,” he said. “However, many growing concerns related to climate change cannot be adequately addressed without proper knowledge on what needs to be done.”
The governor praised the Greening Education Partnership as a laudable program and expressed optimism that the project’s collaboration with Niger State’s Green Initiative would yield desired results. He also announced plans to host the next Green Summit, where GEP would be given a platform to showcase their work.
Governor Bago highlighted Niger State’s progress in climate-resilient agriculture, including building the largest greenhouses in Africa and negotiating with the Egyptian and Russian governments for a multi-million-dollar flower offtake deal.
GEP National Focal Point, Engr. Rahman Mogaji, explained that the project aims to address climate change through education, with four pillars: greening schools, curriculum, teacher training, and community greening. He commended Governor Bago’s transformation agenda, which includes green projects.
The Director-General of Niger State Schools Reforms, Hajiya Maimuna Mohammed, noted that Niger State is already ahead in implementing the project, having engaged relevant ministries and agencies.
The event concluded with the presentation of a Green Leadership Award of Excellence to Governor Bago for his impact on the green economy.
