About GEP Nigeria

GEP Nigeria is the national coordinating agency responsible for overseeing the coordination and implementation of the Greening Education Partnership (GEP) programmes and activities among all stakeholders, including government institutions, NGOs, development partners, and the private sector. It serves as the country’s focal point within UNESCO’s global GEP initiative, ensuring that Nigeria’s education system becomes a key driver of climate action and resilience.

Through its work, GEP Nigeria promotes the transformation of schools into greener learning environments, supports the training and empowerment of teachers, and leverages the energy and creativity of Nigeria’s youth to champion climate-smart innovations. It also strengthens community mobilization efforts, ensuring that families and local structures are active participants in building a climate-resilient society.

At its core, GEP Nigeria seeks to align education with the urgent demands of the climate crisis, helping the nation prepare its learners for a sustainable green economy while contributing to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Our Mission

To build a block-chain greening society by getting every learner climate-ready.

Getting Every Learner Climate Ready.

The Greening Education Partnership (GEP) Nigeria is committed to transforming education into a driver of sustainability and climate action. Our work is guided by four core pillars:

  1. Greening Schools – embedding sustainability into teaching, learning, and school operations.
  2. Greening Teachers & Youth – equipping educators and young people to become climate champions and future leaders of sustainability.
  3. Greening Curriculum – integrating climate change, environmental literacy, and sustainable development into curricula.
  4. Greening Communities – linking schools with their surrounding communities to build local green economies.

    OUR MISSION

To build a block-chain greening society by getting every learner climate-ready.

    The 4 Pillars of GEP

GEP Nigeria is anchored on four transformative pillars that drive the implementation of the Greening Education Transformation Agenda (GETA).

    1. Greening Schools

GEP Nigeria is driving school transformation by embedding sustainability and climate resilience into learning environments. Currently, 50% of schools in Nigeria lack electricity, 41% lack safe water, and 62% lack sanitation facilities (UNICEF, 2022). These gaps make schools highly vulnerable to climate shocks such as floods and heatwaves. To address this, GEP is introducing a Green Curriculum that equips students with climate knowledge and practical skills to adapt and innovate for a sustainable future. By promoting renewable energy, climate-resilient infrastructure, and safe water and sanitation in schools, we aim to create green spaces where learning can thrive despite environmental disruptions.

    2. Greening Teachers

Teachers are at the heart of delivering climate-smart education. Yet, Nigeria continues to face a severe teacher shortage with an average pupil–teacher ratio of 43:1 (UNESCO, 2021), far above the recommended standard. Many teachers also lack the tools and training to integrate climate change into classroom teaching. Between 2025 and 2030, GEP Nigeria intends to train and accredit 500,000 teachers as “Smart Teachers” equipped with digital tools, green pedagogy, and climate education resources. This effort will empower teachers to inspire climate-conscious learners while raising the professional standard of teaching in Nigeria.

    3. Greening Youths.

Nigeria has one of the youngest populations globally, with about 70% under the age of 30 (UNFPA, 2023). This youth bulge represents enormous untapped potential for climate leadership and innovation. However, many face barriers such as high learning poverty. For instance, 70% of children cannot read a simple text by age 10 (World Bank, 2022). To unlock this potential, GEP aims to train 1 million youths between 2025 and 2030, equipping them with digital, entrepreneurial, and green skills. This prepares them to become climate innovators, solution creators, and advocates driving Nigeria’s transition to a sustainable and inclusive green economy.

    4. Greening Communities

Communities are the frontline of climate impacts, from the 1.4 million people displaced by the 2022 floods across 34 states (NEMA, 2022) to rural northern households grappling with drought and desertification. GEP Nigeria strengthens community resilience by mobilizing local leaders, parents, and grassroots networks to adopt climate-smart practices, early warning systems, and inclusive adaptation strategies. By building Communities of Practice, we ensure local actors become knowledge hubs, sharing experiences, co-developing solutions, and sustaining climate-smart action beyond the life of projects.

Key action points of GEP Nigeria
