GEPNIGERIA
Green Education Project
OUR MISSION
To build a block-chain greening society by getting every learner climate-ready.
Our Strategic Objective
GEP Nigeria is committed to advancing a national response that connects education with climate action. Our work is anchored on ensuring that the education sector not only adapts to the realities of climate change but also contributes actively to building a sustainable future.
One key objective is to transform schools into green and climate-resilient spaces where learners acquire knowledge, skills, and values that support sustainability. We aim to empower teachers with the right tools, training, and resources to deliver climate-smart education in ways that are practical and impactful.
GEP Nigeria intends to harness the creativity, energy, and innovation of young people. By equipping them with green skills and opportunities, we ensure that youth become central actors in climate action and not just passive beneficiaries.
We also strengthen community participation, recognizing that families, local organizations, and grassroots networks are critical in embedding climate resilience into everyday life.
Through these strategic objectives, GEP Nigeria contributes to national development priorities of Nigeria, global climate commitments, and the Sustainable Development Goals, ensuring that education remains at the heart of the country’s transition to a green economy.
We Believe in A Collaborative Approach
Inspire
GEP Nigeria Inspires individuals, schools, communities to engage in green practices and embrace lifelong learning approach that integrates climate education into school curricula.
Influence
GEP Nigeria Influences policy and decision makers on creating and formulating policies to strengthen education systems to be climate-smart with adequate measures towards greening the society.
Implement
GEP Nigeria implements greening programs and projects with a focus on empowering and mobilizing young individuals’ community centers, and learning cities to take action on climate change.
We are Championing the Agenda.
GEP Nigeria stands at the forefront of the Greening Education Transformation Agenda (GETA), driving action across schools, teachers, youth, and communities. As the national coordinating agency, we work with government institutions, civil society, private sector, and development partners to ensure that climate resilience and sustainability are at the heart of Nigeria’s education and development systems.
Our role goes beyond advocacy. We are setting the pace for implementation. From conducting state-level assessments in Bauchi, Niger, and Katsina to engaging stakeholders in building practical frameworks, GEP Nigeria ensures that policies translate into real change. By introducing tools like the GEP Tablets, facilitating teacher development programs, mobilizing youth through GreenCorps, and supporting community climate hubs, we are creating pathways that empower people and systems to thrive in a changing climate.
Through collaboration, innovation, and accountability, we are not only aligning Nigeria with global climate and education commitments but also ensuring that no child, teacher, or community is left behind in the transition to a greener and more resilient future.
WHY GO GREEN?
Why Go Green?
Challenge of Youth Population
The massive youth population of the country presents both a challenge and opportunity. With over 70% of Nigerians under the age of 30 and 43% under 15 (UNFPA, 2024), Nigeria has one of the youngest populations globally. Youth are disproportionately impacted by floods, droughts, and displacement, yet they are also the largest untapped resource for climate innovation. From climate-tech startups to grassroots eco-clubs, Nigerian youth are already demonstrating how engagement, leadership, and innovation can turn vulnerability into strength, if they are given the right platforms.
Climate Crisis Statistics
Schools in Nigeria sit at the frontline of the climate crisis. Over 18.5 million children are already out of school (UNICEF, 2022), and for those enrolled, the situation is worsening because 50% of schools lack electricity, 41% lack safe water, and 62% lack sanitation (World Bank, 2022). In 2022 alone, floods destroyed over 500 schools and disrupted learning for 1.5 million children across 34 states. Without greening education infrastructure, climate shocks will continue eroding access, safety, and learning outcomes.
Pupil – Teacher Ratio
Teachers are equally affected, yet they remain key drivers of transformation. Pupil–teacher ratio in Nigeria stands at 43:1 (UNESCO, 2021), one of the highest globally, with many teachers unprepared for integrating climate change into teaching. Professional development that equips educators with green skills, digital tools, and resilience training is essential not only for classroom delivery but also for ensuring teachers themselves are resilient to disasters and socio-economic shocks that force dropouts and attrition.
Impact on Communities
Communities remain the backbone of resilience. Coastal towns face sea-level rise and erosion (Reuters, 2025), northern states are battling desertification, while farming communities in the Middle Belt continue to lose hectares of farmland to flooding. Local adaptation strategies, such as community climate hubs and early warning systems, show that communities are not just victims but key actors. Strengthening their role in Greening Education Transformation Agenda means building bottom-up ownership and ensuring that climate solutions are relevant, inclusive, and sustainable.
